What’s New In The Fashion Space This June?

Here’s a quick look at what the world of fashion has been up to this month.

GUCCI BRINGS CELESTIAL BEAUTY TO THE RUNWAY WITH COSMOGONIE COLLECTION

For Gucci’s 2023 cruise runway show, creative director Alessandro Michele curated a collection inspired by the constellations. Titled Cosmogonie, the 101-piece fashion presentation was held at Italy’s Castel del Monte, a 13th-century castle in Puglia’s countryside commissioned by Frederick II. The show was a celebration of the stars, and paid homage to philosophers Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin. “Mystical encounters and mythological places — it is all written in the stars,” the house explained of the inspiration. The collection opened with a sheer, sparkly dress paired with a faux fur jacket, followed by standout accessories. Looks featured extremely sheer garments with rhinestone detailing resembling the stars. Elsewhere, models walked down the runway in metallic, glittery capes, alongside sequined numbers in green, red, and more.

NIKE AND JACQUEMUS MAKE SUMMER BETTER

Nike and Jacquemus have joined hands to release their first collection. The upcoming collection will be a summer collection consisting of unisex accessories and many women’s ready-to-wear items, from biker shorts to pleated skirts and halter-neck dresses. It will be unveiled at Jacquemus’s next physical runway show, scheduled for June 2022. “For this collaboration with Nike, I wanted to create a collection that reinterprets athletic women’s sportswear in a minimal way. I have always been inspired by vintage ACG pieces and Nike campaigns from the 1990s,” the French designer said in a statement. A teaser post on Jacquemus’ Instagram feed showed the outlines of a tennis court, meant to highlight the world of outdoor pursuits and court sports, and Nike’s infamous Swoosh logo.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE IS LOUIS VUITTON’S FIRST INDIAN AMBASSADOR

Deepika Padukone has been appointed as Louis Vuitton’s first-ever Indian brand ambassador. The French luxury brand announced the same through a new handbag campaign, which sees her joining Emma Stone and Chinese actor Zhou Dongyu in a series of promotional shots. “Following a strong collaborative relationship with the Maison, the award-winning actress begins an exciting new chapter of her journey with Louis Vuitton,” the fashion house announced in a press release. She has been regularly photographed wearing the outfits and bags from the French label, and has previously modelled for the brand. In 2020, Padukone became the first Indian actor to feature in a campaign for the label, posing for a mock vintage book cover alongside stars like Léa Seydoux and Sophie Turner.

TOM FORD STEPS DOWN AS THE CHAIRMAN OF CFDA

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has announced that Tom Ford will be stepping down from his place as chairman of the organisation on May 31. Ford has served as chairman of the CFDA since June 2019. The organisation’s CEO, Steven Kolb, will take over the role of the interim chair for the rest of the year. In January, the organisation will vote for a new chairperson to succeed Ford. In a release, the American designer said in a statement: “When I began my role as chairman in June of 2019, my goal was to help the American fashion industry become more globally recognised for its talent and importance.” In his three years as chairman, Ford initiated a number of initiatives through the CFDA, many of which focused on diversification and inclusion. “As chairman of the CFDA, I have had the privilege to experience first-hand the remarkable determination and optimism that drives our industry,” Ford added. “I am honoured to have been able to support the truly incredible talent in the American fashion industry for these past three years, and I look forward to continuing in my role on the CFDA Board.”

DIOR PRESENTS CAPSULE COLLECTION WITH ELI RUSSELL

Kim Jones has worked with guest designer Eli Russell Linnetz, the creative director of Erl, on the latest Dior collection. The Dior Men Spring 2023 Capsule collection pays homage to the Californian atmosphere with the skateboarders. With a little bit of street style and a whole lot of self-expression, the iconic creations of the house will be reinterpreted by highlighting the cross-pollination between Jones and ERL. “We have worked with lots of different people on our collections, but this time I wanted to work with someone in a different way; I wanted somebody to see Dior from a different angle. With Eli Russell Linnetz, not only do I like his work, but also working with a younger designer on Dior Men and seeing things from his perspective, felt incredibly inspiring. It was both familiar and revelatory; reaffirming why we both dreamed about working in fashion in the first place,” says Jones. Photographer, designer, and art director, this Californian all-rounder has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West and Lady Gaga, before being discovered by Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe of Dover Street Market, with whom he launched the first collection of his ready-to-wear brand Erl in 2020.

BALENCIAGA AND ADIDAS TEAM UP

Balenciaga and Adidas Originals have officially joined forces, continuing the athletic retailer’s latest venture into high fashion — and within the Kering brand family. Deemed Balenciaga / Adidas, the collection aims to mix both brands’ archives to reinterpret each’s elements. According to a brand statement, it’s also inspired by the late ’90s and early 2000s. Adidas shared the news on its Instagram feed after Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 fashion show. The collection includes a range of versatile pieces in a primarily black, red, and white colour palette, with pops of blue and grey. The clothing features T-shirts, hoodies, shorts, socks, and track jackets, with varying logos — mainly Balenciaga lettering next to Adidas’ signature three-leaf and triple stripes — from the duo. It also features a mini dress, leggings, wide-leg jeans, and a puffer jacket. On the shoe front, the collaboration hinges on two key styles. The first is a revamped version of Balenciaga’s iconic Triple S sneaker, rendered in palettes of blue and white or black, cream, and grey. The second Adidas x Balenciaga shoe is another remix of a Demna- introduced staple: the Speed sock sneaker. The collaboration was announced after the brand’s Spring 2023 fashion show, where it also made its runway debut.
