Square Sock Toe

Knitting Tutorial - Learn how to knit a square sock toe on DPNs and on a circular needle with the magic loop method
Square sock toes are mysterious. When you see the finished sock, nothing about the toe shaping looks square. But the sock does indeed begin with a small square (well... more like a rectangle) of stitches.

Instead of casting on stitches horizontally across the tip of the toe, four stitches are cast on vertically and then you knit a small rectangle in stockinette stitch before you begin working the remainder of the sock in rounds.
