The first step you need to follow on how to make a doll is to gather the materials you will be needing. Doing so allows a smooth flow when you’ve started the process.

These are the things you need:

  • Embroidery floss
  • Yarn
  • Chopstick
  • Polyester or wool batting
  • Pins
  • Skin-toned thread
  • Needle
  • 10-inch cotton jersey squares
  • 10 x 18 inches of washable fabric
  • Doll template
  • Four 2-inch jersey squares

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

|

Learning how to make a rag doll requires you to make sure you have the template printed as your guide.

Start with the body by folding a 10-by-18-inch washable fabric with the right sides facing you and end to end. Lay the doll template on the fabric and mark dotted lines on the shoulders on the fold.

Cut the fabric based on the template, without touching the shoulder line, and then set aside. For the head and hands and feet, cut a 10-inch jersey square and four 2-inch squares.

Step 3: Stitch the Fabric

|

To form the body of the doll, start stitching at the bottom leg, at the outer edge. Stitch up one side to the end of one arm, but make sure to leave a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Repeat the same process on the other side of the body. Stitch the legs’ inner edges.

For the head, fold the 10-inch jersey square in half lengthwise and then pin the sides to close the fold. Start stitching at the fold by sewing a curved shape across the short end.

Continue stitching down the open side of the fabric and cut the excess fabric. Keep a 1/8-inch seam allowance.

Turn the body and head right side out.

Step 4: Roll Batting

|

The batting creates the form or volume of the doll.

Cut three 2-by-7-inch strips of polyester or wool batting. Lay the pieces in a star shape.

Roll another batting into a 2-inch ball, and place it in the middle of the star-shaped batting.

Bring the strips up and then around the ball. Once the batting is completely rolled, use your fingers or a chopstick to insert the batting inside the fabric for the head.

Make sure the head is firm. You can add more batting if necessary as you smooth it out with your fingers.

Step 5: Create the Feet, Head, and Hands

|

Learning how to make a doll needs you to make sure these parts are round and soft enough.

Start with the head by tying some skin-colored thread around the bottom of the ball. Ensure there is enough fabric for the neck.

Sew the bottom opening of the neck closed.

For the hands and feet, make a ball on each 2-inch square using the batting. Tie each closed ball with a skin-colored thread.

Ensure you cut the excess thread so it doesn’t get in the way as you assemble the doll later.

Step 6: Stuff the Body with the Batting

|

Stuffing the body with batting allows you to determine how you want the doll to look like in terms of volume.

Load the body with the batting, but not that firmly stuffed as the head. To tighten the neck opening, use a gathering stitch.

Insert the head into the neck opening and whipstitch it into the body. Make sure to double the length of the thread to make sure the stitch is sturdy.

Use the same stitch for the feet and hands.

Step 7: Create Hair and Other Features

|

For this step on how to make a yarn doll, you will need pins to mark the features you’ll make to serve as a guide.

Start with the hair by stitching yarn in loops. For the loops to stay in place, make a small anchoring stitch at the end of each loop.

For the eyes and mouth of the doll, use a needle with embroidery floss. Insert it at the back of the head and then out where you placed the marking on.

The needle should end at the back of the head. Knot the thread to seal the features.

If you want your doll to have straight hair, you can use alpaca, while for curly hair, you can embroider mohair yarn on the head.

Step 8: Finish the Hair

|

This step allows you to create the style of the hair. Snip the loops on the head to make the hair.

Make sure they are fluffy enough and cut them according to how you want the hair to look like. As you style the hair, gently massage the face to shape it, too.

With these easy steps on how to make a doll, you can create as many as you like to gift to your children and their friends. You can even style the raw dolls to make them look colorful and playful.
