Anatomy and Fit Comparison of 3 Toe Up Sock Heels

Knitting Tutorial: Anatomy and Fit Comparison of 3 Toe-Up Sock Heels: (Flapless) Gusset Heel, Gusset and Flap Heel, Short Row Heel
Many knitters are curious about the heel shaping for socks knit from the toe up. Three popular toe-up heel shapes are the (flapless) gusset heel, the gusset and flap heel and the short row heel. Since the three heels are constructed differently, they fit differently.

Each shaping method has variations of course, but for the most common versions, the gusset heel is a good fit for people with higher than average insteps, the gusset and flap heel is a good fit for people with an average instep and the short row heel is a good fit for people with lower than average insteps.
